READING
Parents and Students,
For our independent reading the students will be forming book clubs. They will have a choice to show/ talk about what they are reading about by making annotations (using sticky notes) or keeping a reading journal. Both of these options will be taught and modeled in class. For more information, check out these links!

STUDY GUIDE for 11/ 8/ 2019 ELA
Topics included from previous test. We have reviewed this from the previous test.
Remember that the study guide is just a guide. You will have to apply what you have learned in class, notes, previous quizzes and tests will also be helpful to review. Ask questions if you have any!
- Point of view- 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient (what is the difference between these 4 different POV’s). Recognize which pronouns are being used to determine POV.
- Elements of Drama- All vocabulary associated with this and understanding of how to write a script as practiced in class, can also be found in notes.
- Compare and Contrast- What parts of the story do you compare and contrast? Characters, plot, theme.
- Finding text evidence to answer questions as well as your inferencing skills when reading informational text. We have practiced this in class as we work around the room reading Fall passages. Questions on text will be set up and very similar to this.
Topics included from previous test. We have reviewed this from the previous test.
- Theme- Given a short story I can find the theme. The theme is the central idea or message. Ask yourself, what did I learn? What did the characters learn?
- Inferences- Using your background knowledge and details from the text.

Wonder! As we journey through the story of August the kids will be relating to real life situations, drawing inferences and discovering theme, authors point of view, vocabulary, tone, character relationships, key details and so much more! I am loving how this book allows students to interpret the text in their own individual way and bringing this book to life in all the great ways it was meant to be used and understood! We are going out of our class and around the school with Mrs. Browne's postcard precepts to campaign for the #choosekindness classroom that we strive to be!
As we finish each section of the book students are asking to utilize writing skills and answer the related questions with detail and correct grammar. They are to reinstate the question to answer completely. They will also be working in group projects, completing extension projects and studying vocabulary and spelling. I will update here as we add on to our assignments, challenge and enhance what we already know to grow as students, meet our 5th grade standards and more!
5th grade vocabulary throughout the year.
We will work in our Wordly Wise vocabulary books everyday throughout the year. Please visit the quizlet site to study at home with engaging games and quizzes to strenthen skills and knowledge. Each child had their unique code on the front page of their school planners. This allows them free access to all Quizlet offers to our students. Click HERE for our current lesson

Plot Summary
Brian is flying to visit his father when the pilot of his bush plane dies of a heart attack. Brian has to crash-land the plane in a shallow wilderness lake, where he is stranded alone. After the plane crash, Brian must fend for himself. His only tool is a hatchet, given to him by his mother.
We will reflect on these topics using our Hatchet Novel and look ahead to referencing these topics in our upcoming novel Wonder. If a student is able to acquire their own copy of Wonder that would be amazing. If not, we will provide the student with a copy. We would appreciate any extra copies that you may have, and can return them to you if needed at the end of our study as well!! Thank you in advance for this!!

July 23-Aug 2nd-
We have started a Titanic theme this past week and the children have really gotten into it! We have read Titanic Tragedy, studied the facts, researched and read the accounts of the survivors, explored the ships design and dug deep into the history of the "unsinkable" ship. After our research we began working on writing a informative story as if they were a survivor on the Titanic. The students have come up with some great ideas, focusing on main idea and key details. We are going to interview each other so we are able to share our stories and create 1912 newspaper articles to display in the hall complete with text features. We will work in class on this series till next Wednesday. I have enjoyed hearing about all the research they have been doing by choice at home and the resources they have brought in to share with the class! I am looking forward to the finished article and historical fiction piece they are working on in class.

SO EXCITED FOR BOOK CLUB!!!
Students will be reading their personal choice of a novel within their Lexile level, We will meet in small groups to discuss and work on our NC standards in a way that allows them the freedom of book genre that appeals most to them individually. I am really looking forward to what they choose and improving their reading, writing and comprehension skills. Kids will have chapters assigned each night and a few questions to answer as well. This small group work will also allow us to utilize our data to meet the needs of students according to what they need to work on to improve scores and confidence in all subject areas!
